Privacy
Your information, plainly.
Updated October 31, 2026. Short version: we collect as little as we can, never sell it, and delete it when you ask.
The newsletter
When you subscribe, your email address goes to beehiiv, the service that sends SB Savvy. beehiiv records whether issues are delivered and opened so we can tell what readers find useful. Every issue has a one-click unsubscribe link.
The Glow Map
If you add your house, we store the address, the map pin, the details and photo you give us, and your email. Only what you chose to show (your address or just your block, the name, hours, note and photo) appears on the map, and only after we approve it. Your email is never shown or shared; we use it only to contact you about your entry. To stop spam we keep a scrambled version of your internet address that can't be turned back into the original.
You can take your house off the map anytime with your removal link, or by emailing us. Removing it deletes the address, photo and email. We delete every Glow Map entry by January 31, 2027.
Eat & Drink corrections
When you tell us something is wrong with a place, we store the place, what you picked, your note, the page you were on and, only if you typed it, your email. We use the email just to ask you about that place, and we erase it once the report is handled. A report never changes the list by itself; we check it first. To stop spam we keep the same scrambled version of your internet address as the Glow Map.
The weekend planner
Your weekend plan is saved in your browser, on your own phone or computer. When you tap Share, we save the plan under a short code so the link works. That record holds the weekend, the IDs of the listings in it, when it was made and how many times the link has been opened. It has no name, email, IP address or device ID, and anyone with the link can see the plan. We also keep daily totals of listings added to plans, ready-made plans used and calendar files downloaded, as plain counts. Opening a link shows up in Cloudflare's standard server logs. If you use the Google Calendar links or open a route in Google Maps, those details go to Google. To delete your plan, tap Clear in the planner or clear this site's data in your browser. To take down a shared link, email us the link.
Comments
When you comment, we store your comment, first name, the neighborhood you picked, the page and your email. Your name, neighborhood and comment are public; your email never is. We use it only to reach you about your comment, and we add you to the newsletter only if you tick that box. Your browser keeps a private key so you can delete your own comment from the same device; otherwise email us. Deleting a comment erases its text and email. To stop spam we keep the same scrambled version of your internet address as the Glow Map.
Votes
When you vote on the Glow Map or for an Ask Savvy question, we keep your pick and a scrambled version of your email that can't be turned back into the address. We use it only to allow one vote per email. Your email itself isn't stored with the vote; it goes to the newsletter only if you tick that box. To stop spam we keep the same scrambled version of your internet address as the Glow Map.
Over or under? calls are kept the same way. Contest guesses, like the Gloom Pool, are different: we keep your email with your guess so we can tell the winner, then delete every entry once the winner has been told. Neither one adds you to the newsletter unless you tick the box.
Maps and addresses
Map images load from OpenFreeMap, using OpenStreetMap data. When you look up an address on the Glow Map form, it goes to the U.S. Census Bureau's address service to find the spot.
The website
The site doesn't use advertising trackers or cookies. Our host, Cloudflare, keeps standard server logs to keep the site running and safe.
