Where the status comes from
Closures on Forest Service land are set by written forest orders. We read every active Los Padres order each morning and match it to each trail's number. City, county and state parks don't publish a feed like that, so those hikes say so.
How we measure a hike
Each route follows the trail as mapped on OpenStreetMap from the trailhead to the named spot, with heights from the US Geological Survey every 250 feet or so. Time assumes 3 miles an hour plus an hour per 2,000 feet of climbing, there and back. Your pace will differ.
After rain
Muddy trails get rutted by boots and bikes, and burn areas can slide. The city asks everyone to let trails dry out before using them. Canyon trails are where flash floods hit first, so skip them when a flood warning is up.
Closures and fire danger: Los Padres National Forest alerts. Routes: © OpenStreetMap contributors. Elevation: USGS 3D Elevation Program. Weather alerts: National Weather Service. Rain and temperature: Open-Meteo. Effort is our own label from distance plus climb (a mile for every 500 feet). "Route open" means the only closure order on that trail covers a section the route doesn't use. A clear status here doesn't mean a trail is safe or in good shape.
